Sharon Pennington Hiatt, 78, passed away peacefully in her home in Madison, Mississippi, Wednesday, September 27th, 2023. She died the same way she lived, surrounded by her family who adored her. Sharon was the youngest of three children and was born on December 12th,1944 to Courtney and Myrtle Pennington in Madisonville, Louisiana. As a young girl, she loved attending church with her paternal grandmother, Katie Pennington and spending time in the restaurant her parents owned. She graduated from Covington High School where she had fond memories of fun times with friends, many with whom she maintained a lifelong connection. Sharon lived most of her life in Madisonville and always considered it her home. Over the years, Sharon held various professional positions in bookkeeping and human resources before retiring as the Human Resources Manager at Cline Tours in Ridgeland, Mississippi. Perhaps her most successful career was as a “Super Nanny” for her grandchildren, a position from which she never retired! Her favorite responsibilities included leading the after-school snack club, making costumes for school dress up days, and providing driving lessons. Sharon received exemplary reviews in her role as Grammie. Three loves consumed Sharon’s life —family, cooking, and gardening. Sharon spent the last twenty years married to her true love and best friend, Roger Hiatt, who devotedly cared for her as her health declined. She was adored by her children, their spouses, and her grandchildren and she was enormously proud of all of them. She bragged about them to everyone who would listen! Her life was devoted to serving and caring for them all. Sharon also maintained a loving friendship with her first husband, Tommy Cuevas, father of her three children, and his wife Brenda, which exemplified her kindness, loyalty, and generosity when it came to her family’s happiness. Most people who knew Sharon experienced her love of cooking at some point. She prepared southern and creole delights with ease, whether it was for her immediate family or for fifty people with short notice. As far as Sharon was concerned, the more the merrier, and we all obliged. She and David were a great team and known for hosting neighborhood crawfish boils and traditional New Year’s Day meals. Our family recipes will live on through David and Dionne, who both inherited her love and talent for cooking. We will all miss her signature fried chicken! In her spare time, Sharon gardened. There was always something blooming in her yard and a “Garden of the Month” sign could often be seen proudly standing in front of her home. Whether tending to roses or planting pansies, she had a way of making everything more beautiful. Sharon was known for her hospitality, generosity, strong work ethic, and never-quit attitude. Her relentless energy is a quality she passed on to Debbie. She was optimistic and taught us to look for the silver lining. Everyone who knew her loved her. Sharon was predeceased by her parents, Thomas Courtney Pennington and Myrtle Dawsey Pennington, brothers, Thomas Courtney Pennington Jr. and Jerry Bernard Pennington, and stepson, Trevor Christian Hiatt. She is survived by her husband, Roger Franklin Hiatt, her children, Debbie Cuevas Morris (Brad), David Paul Cuevas (Laurie McMorrough), and Dionne Cuevas Stiede (Jim), her stepson, Trenton Carley Hiatt, her grandchildren, Jodi Stiede-Landau, Kevin Scott Stiede, Conner McDade Morris, Courtney Pennington Morris, Victoria Ann Cuevas, Skyla Isabella Hiatt, Anna Faith Cuevas, Brianna Hope Cuevas, Hendrix Harley Hiatt, Helena Jo Hiatt, and great grandchild, Kit William Stiede. A graveside service will be held at the Dendiger Cemetery in Madisonville, Louisiana on Sunday, October 22nd, at 3:00. Family and friends are welcome.
