Barry Kent Jones, age 67, was born February 1, 1955 in San Diego, California to Kennith and Elizabeth (Blackmon) Jones. He passed away on January 12, 2023 at UMMC in Jackson, Mississippi.
Barry completed his early education in Dunoon, Scotland and returned to Mississippi with his family in 1969. He grew up working on the family cattle and tree farms while attending school. He earned his Juris Doctor and Master's Degree in Taxation (LLM) from Emory University. He was licensed to practice law in Georgia, Tennessee and Mississippi. He was a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Barry returned to Mississippi and settled in Jackson in 1986, where he met his wife of 33 years, Theresa Upshaw Jones, who is a lifelong Jackson resident. They lived in Madison, Mississippi.
Barry became well known through his practice of law in state and federal taxation, estate planning and gift tax planning, compliance and tax controversy; business law, employee benefits law, estate and trust administration; asset protection planning; and elder law. In addition to his practice of law with several prominent law firms, Barry was an adjunct professor at the University of Mississippi Law School. He was a nationally published author, frequent regional and national speaker and presenter, and an expert legal witness. He frequently taught legal seminars for the Mississippi Bar Association and the Mississippi CPA Association. He enjoyed lifelong learning and teaching attorneys and Certified Public Accountants.
Barry was a Civil War Historian and loved history. He enjoyed mountains, beaches, travel, and loved and served his family throughout his life.
Barry is survived by his wife of 33 years, Theresa Upshaw Jones, brothers, Scott (Theresa) Jones of Stuarts Draft, VA and Craig (Li Mei) Jones of Alpharetta, GA; and a niece, Skye Jones (Danny) Hurley of Atlanta, GA.
A memorial gathering will be at Natchez Trace Funeral Home on Highway 51 in Madison, from 1:30-3:00 PM on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
