Carl and I met while we were both in WLC school during our deployment to Kosovo, and ever since I have known him, I’ve considered him to be the wisest person I’ve ever known. Carl was the type of guy that didn’t need to think before he spoke, because he had this gift of “instant wisdom.”
Even after he came down with cancer...I was always humbled by his attitude, and inspired by his periodic posts on life.
The world lost a great man, but I will never forget the guy that taught me that only “Yank” cornbread was made with yellow cornmeal...and that REAL cornbread is made with white cornmeal.

I would like to share my most heartfelt condolences and prayers to Nora and family with hope you can find some comfort after this lost. My mind has wondered over the last few days and the “Carl Bishop” I knew. He was a devoted, husband, father (to family and the young people he served with), faithful to his religious beliefs, moral beliefs, and military service and oaths he swore to uphold. Thru the years we shared meals together, training missions, work, and “old man” PT/physical training. Carl loved to talk and we always shared conversations about life experiences, photography, family, religion, and politics. Carl was a mentor and teacher, always, to his subordinates, peers and, even his leaders, that where wise enough to listen to his advice. If you met Carl for the first time he was your friend from then on. He always had a story to tell but always, equally, and an ear to listen. I watched Carl over the last few years as he planned for his retirement, before his diagnosis with cancer, and his reaction to this diagnosis. As usual, he faced this diagnosis with a courage and perseverance that we all can only hope to have. Some might say the cancer won, I don’t think so. We all have a finite time we spend in this world and Carl left a lasting positive influence and impression on so many lives in the short time he was here. He used his time here in ways that so many will remember and cherish for the rest of their lives. Although cancer and death may have shortened his physical life, his influence and memories live on. I am proud to have known him for the last fifteen years. Proud to have worked with him, served with him, deployed with him, proud to call him my best friend, or as he would say "Best Bud”.

To the Bishop Family,
I had the privilege of knowing Carl when he was in the 1108th TASMG. His infectious smile and laughter are going to be missed, but he did leave something for all of us to remember him by- - the many photographs he took while deployed and the photos he took during our unit Christmas parties. Rest in peace Carl.
