Obituary of Doris S. DeZutter
Please share a memory of Doris to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Doris Ann DeZutter, née Sweet, passed away peacefully at St. Catherine’s Village Dec. 20, 2021 surrounded by her family. Doris was born Jan. 17, 1938 in St. Louis, MO, to Edward Arthur and Jesse Margaret (Vance) Sweet. She grew up in Webster Groves, MO, and studied Chemistry at Washington University of St. Louis.
She was formerly married to S. David Boozer, and after moving to Anniston, AL, raised a family there. She was active in First United Methodist Church, the Grove Sunday School Class and sang in the church choir as well as participating in the Gardening Club, Girl Scouts of America, and numerous other volunteer roles. Doris’ passion for supporting her children led her to brave much adversity by founding and leading the first PFLAG chapter in Alabama.
After separating from her first husband and re-starting her life on her own terms, Doris loved to travel across country to visit and spoil her grandchildren. She also loved to visit friends and travel abroad. She re-connected with her high-school sweetheart Donald Robert DeZutter, and remarried on May 24, 2003. After many years living happily in their new home in Birmingham, AL, they moved to Madison, MS to be close to Don’s daughter and granddaughter. There, at St. Catherine’s Village, they made many close friends as Doris continued to be active in everything from the Happy Stitchers to the choir.
Doris is survived by her husband Donald DeZutter, daughter Margaret (Pamela) Boozer-Strother and their son Kyle of Prince George’s County, MD, son David (Leslie) Boozer and their three daughters Lauren, Kaitlyn, and Meghan of St. Louis, MO, step-daughter Stacy DeZutter and her daughter MiMi of Jackson, MS, and step-daughter Amy DeZutter (Ron) Polikoff of Plantation, FL. She was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Jessie Sweet, her step-mother Merle Sweet, and her brother Robert Vance Sweet.
