Obituary of Nancy Majure

Please share a memory of Nancy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Nancy Martin Majure was born in McComb, MS, on May 29,1956, to Lloyd and Betty Martin. She was described as dainty at birth, and that was true, but she was also strong-willed and precocious, walking without ever crawling because she “didn’t want to get her knees dirty.” She quickly figured out how to climb trees without parental permission. Aided and abetted by surrogate parents, friends, and Marc, her husband, she continued her life in this manner thereafter. Nancy passed away peacefully on October 16, 2021, at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. Only someone with Nancy’s strength and faith in God could have kept the desire to live life to its fullest in the face of a difficult diagnosis. She was witty and had a deep laugh from the belly, drank black tea, and loved Marc, cats, music, books, art, and the musical Hamilton. A dedicated cat rehabilitator, she socialized three feral kittens and adopted them into her household with the rest of her brood. Rumor had it that if she added one more cat, she would have to apply for a license to be a kennel. A true cat mother, when she was in the ICU, she would tell the nurses she had to “use the litter box.” Conversations were not superficial with Nancy. She was a deep thinker who pondered life’s challenging questions. Even through serious illness, she also managed to maintain her sharp sense of humor. She once phoned a friend after a particularly difficult hospitalization and said, “Hello, this is Lazarus.” Nancy graduated from Parklane Academy in 1974. She attended Millsaps College, where she was in Kappa Delta Sorority. She graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Nursing in 1979 and worked as a registered nurse in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. After she moved to Durham, North Carolina, she continued her nursing career in the adolescent unit at Duke University Medical Center and at the Lennox Baker Rehabilitation Hospital for Children. Later in her nursing career she traded Duke Blue for Carolina Blue while working as a discharge planning nurse at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, and at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Nancy also attended Duke Divinity School. Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Dr. Marc Majure, and her cat children, Muffuletta, Capers, Argyle, and Dickens. She also leaves behind numerous friends, who always found her to be loving, loyal, and caring. She is predeceased by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Altus Martin of McComb; an infant sister, Linda Charis Martin; grandparents Mr. and Mrs. A.B. McDonald of Mississippi City and Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Martin of Summit. The family wishes to thank Hospice Ministries, Inc. and all the wonderful people who have cared for and loved her. Not to say that Nancy was an opinionated individual, but when she talked about “arrangements” she always said that she did not want sadness but wanted a celebration in the spirit of her Scotch-Irish heritage where people will raise a glass in her honor while telling their most embarrassing story about her. Please join us where you will be able to fill a glass and toast a life well-lived on Saturday October 23, 2021 at Natchez Trace Funeral Home from the hours of 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm. A graveside committal service will follow at 4:00 pm in Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery. Nancy will be laid to rest with two of her favorite feline children, Whiskers and Jackson, in a private inurnment service. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to SAFE Haven for Cats (safehavenforcats.org), Hospice Ministries, Inc. (hospiceministries.org) or another charity of your choosing.
