Virginia Curtis Thomas, known to her family as “Vivi”, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and cherished friend, passed away on August 19, 2020 after an extended illness. She was 78. Virginia was born November 11, 1941, in Stewart, Mississippi to Alton Bascomb Curtis and Maybell Williams Curtis. In October 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, William P. Thomas, and together they traveled the world for more than fifty years. Although they enjoyed visiting many countries, their favorite place to spend time together was at their family farm. A 1959 graduate of Kilmichael High School, she was an honor student and class salutatorian. She was elected “Miss Kilmichael High School” by her classmates, was voted class favorite and president of her senior class. The Class of 1959 always held a special place in her heart. She went on to graduate with honors from Mississippi State College for Women with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. A commercial artist, she worked in advertising and did free-lance art work for a number of years. “Gin” also kept close ties to the art community of Taos, New Mexico and was a featured artist, selected to illustrate the fashion trends of former First Ladies for the American Historical Society. She was also a prominent real estate broker for Ann Jenson Real Estate for over twenty years. She was involved in many organizations, including founding artist for the Madison Center for the Arts and a member of The National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. She attended the Madison United Methodist Church. Vivi’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. Her enthusiasm for travel was shared with her grandchildren in the form of a travel adventure with each that will remain a lifelong memory. Of note, she was an efficient packer who could fit a month’s worth of clothes into a single suitcase for a trip to Europe. She never left one trip without planning the next. She was a person of integrity and character who treasured her lifetime of friendships and will always be remembered for her artistic talent, love of travel, impeccable style, quick wit, loving heart, gorgeous smile and contagious laugh. Survivors include her loving husband, William Patrick Thomas; daughter, Tamara Thomas Gammon, her husband George, and their children Russell Shepherd Gammon and Virginia Kate Gammon of Madison, Mississippi; and a son, Patrick Curtis Thomas, his wife Christina and their three children Elizabeth Ashton Thomas, Christian Patrick Thomas and William Wyatt Thomas of Madison, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Alton Bascomb Curtis, Jr. and his wife Dorothy and also by her beloved dogs Millie Rose and Banjo. Virginia “Vivi” will be laid to rest surrounded by a gathering of family and friends at a graveside service at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 22 at Natchez Trace Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers include Curt Thomas, George A. Gammon III, Russell Gammon, Christian Thomas, William Thomas and Evan Marble. Honorary pallbearers include George A. Gammon, Jr., Marshall Gammon, John Morgan and Alex Sung. Natchez Trace Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
