Obituary of Marilyn Mitchell Avery

Marilyn Avery, 75, of Jackson, passed away peacefully at her home on June 23, 2020.
She was born to the late Charles Lionel Mitchell and Willard Mitchell, January 23, 1945, in Poplarville, Mississippi. Marilyn graduated from Poplarville High School in 1963 and received a BA in education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1970.
She married Ken Avery in 1966, and they lived in Jackson since 1970. Marilyn is survived by three children: Kenny Avery, of Madison; Tyler Avery, of Madison; and Matthew Avery, of Mobile. She is also survived by 4 grandchildren, Rachel and Taylor Avery of Oxford, Ms, Parker Avery of Madison and Morgan Avery of Madison and her sisters Beth Murphy of London, Ontario Canada and Myla Mitchell of Atlanta, Georgia, she was preceded in death by her brother Mark Mitchell of Columbus, Ms.
Marilyn had a spirit of service and was always looking to help others in need whether it was through her Church - Christ United Methodist Church of Jackson or the Mississippi Republican Party serving as State President for the Womens’ Republican party as well as a state delegate to three Presidential Conventions. In her later years Marilyn served 16 years as an election commissioner for Hinds County and was instrumental in bringing computerized elections to the County. Marilyn’s main area of service however, was to her family and to her grandchildren. Nothing made her happier than for the family to be together.
Visitation ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at the Natchez Trace Funeral Home at 759 Hwy. 51 Madison, Ms. The funeral service will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the chapel. Interment to follow in the cemetery. The family insists that people make donations in support of Heart research, in lieu of sending flowers.
