Ellis B. Pickett Madison, MS Ellis Bertram Pickett, age 92, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2020. Born in Newton, Iowa on February 27, 1927, he attended elementary and junior high school in Marshalltown, Iowa and graduated from high school in Independence, Missouri. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from Iowa State University and a Master’s in Hydraulics Engineering from the University of Iowa. Ellis was employed as a hydraulics engineer (just a “Dam Engineer“, he always said) at the U.S. Corp of Engineers Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, MS from 1955 to 1983. He served in the U.S. Navy Reserve from college ROTC in 1944 until his retirement as Lieutenant Commander in 1973. Mr. Pickett’s many interests included Civil War history, walking (especially around the Vicksburg National Military Park), carpentry, as well as classical music and other fine arts. He is fondly remembered for providing unselfish care to his wife, sisters, and children during their times of need. He was also instrumental in the operations of his community library, as well as the education of his grandchildren. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the staff and friends at St. Catherine‘s Village for over 22 years of care and love for our father and grandfather. Certainly, his choice of retirement community has been a blessing for us all, especially for him. He was preceded in death by his parents Elbert and Ethel Pickett, his wife Carol Lee Anway Pickett, and his sisters Carol Pickett and Frances Pickett. Ellis is survived by his children Anne Ackermann and her husband Jeffrey of Breaux Bridge, LA, George Pickett and his wife Vicki of Plano, TX, Linda Cunningham of Vicksburg, MS, and Marian Pickett of Baton Rouge, LA, nine grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm, January 18, 2020 in the Chapel at St, Catherine’s Village in Madison, MS. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to a charity of your choice.
