I think of James whenever I look at the beautiful portrait he did of my daughter Nina. I met James in the early 90's, soon after moving to MS and we were friends almost immediately. I think there are a lot of people who could say the same thing. James was a special person who had a big heart and always wanted to help someone. He will be sorely missed.

I am going to let Charles leave his own, personal note; Nina as well. I can only say that James is very much missed; he leaves a big "hole". Nina and I, and sometimes just I, would stop in to "see if James is in" if we were in his part of town; it was just nice to be with him, and soak for a while in his special blend of patient, gentlemanly encouragement, affirmation, and bonhommie. To visit with James was to make real contact with an active mind, a questing soul; even disagreement was always somewhere between fun and painless. He was a man who loved people, and so he drew them. His regard for persons enabled him to "see" them as individuals; obviously this was the key to his success as an artist. He was a master of the photographic medium, but his portraits were his most outstanding work, and what he most loved doing. We have some excellent photos of Nina, which he did gratis and spur-of-the-moment, during casual visits to the studio; it gave him pleasure to give of his time and his resources. He and Jane were the inspiration for a series of what Nina would call "art parties" at our home, which fond memories we will always treasure. To know James Patterson was to be esteemed and loved, for oneself. To know him was to love him.
