Sam Thompson was born May 29, 1924 in to Ila and Ebbie Thompson, the sixth of eight children, all of whom preceded him in death: Paul Thompson, E.J. Thompson, Inez Satterfield, Louise Mathis, Harold Thompson, Eloise Fagan, William Thompson. He left this life on Saturday, June 16, 2018. His beloved wife of 68 years also preceded him, as well as three grandsons.
Sam considered himself a lifelong Marine, having served actively twice – first in the South Pacific during WWII and stateside during the Korean conflict. He was delighted to be in Washington, DC, for the four-day dedication of the WWII Memorial in 2004, during which veterans were honored at every turn.
Mr. Thompson is survived by daughter Carolyn Hughes (Ralph) of Memphis and son David Thompson (Connie) of Brandon, grandsons Eric Hughes (Donna) and Walter Hughes both of Memphis, Kevin Thompson (Allison) of Nashville, and Carter Thompson (Erin) of Brandon, and 5 great-grandchildren. He leaves a host of nieces and nephews who loved him.
A celebration of Mr. Thompson’s life will be held on Thursday, June 21, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Brandon, MS. Visitation will begin at 9:00, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
