Obituary of Alton G. Milner
Please share a memory of Alton to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Alton G. Milner, 94, passed away in the early morning hours of Thursday August 8, 2024, his family at his side.
Alton was born on June 5, 1930, to James Vasco Milner and Mable Iona Veazey Milner, three months premature and weighing less than 3 lbs. Nursed into health by his devoted mother, Alton grew up strong, enlisting in the US Army in 1947 and serving in Japan and Korea, an experience that left him with a deep appreciation and sympathy for the people of the region. A lifelong civil servant, Al retired from the VA Medical Center in Jackson, where he served as Chief of Medical Administration. He was an avid fisherman and self-taught musician, sang and played bluegrass fiddle and guitar, and led music at Pilgrim's Rest Church in Attala County and Stillwater Church at The Waterford in Ridgeland, where he spent many happy years and made many loving friends. Alton lived a life of loving sacrifice in the service of his family and community.
He is survived by daughters Brenda Milner (Amy) of Flora, MS and Pam Grimes (Sam) of Benton, LA; son Terry Milner (Gabriel) of Durham, NC; grandchildren Adam Watson of San Antonio, TX, and Joey Watson of Lafayette, LA; great grandchildren, Emily Watson, Asher Watson, Chandler Watson, Oliver Watson, and Luci Watson; and sister, Loree Cloninger of Oxford, MS. Alton was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Betty Jean Vance Milner; his parents; siblings James Milner, Warren Milner, GW Milner, Marvin "Buddy" Milner, Billy Wayne Milner, and Jerry Lee Milner.
