In Loving Memory of Gary Alan Smith April 23, 1965 - April 23, 2024 With heavy hearts, we bid farewell to a beloved son, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, Gary Alan Smith. Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, Gary's journey was one of profound impact and unwavering kindness. Gary's early years were marked by academic excellence, culminating in his graduation from Brookwood High School and later from Emory University with a degree in political science in 1987. He was always proud to have played golf for one of Emory’s first golf teams and was heavily involved in student government and residents’ life. His love for his home state of Georgia was evident throughout his life, residing in Atlanta for three decades, Albany for 26 years, and Macon for three years until his illness necessitated a move to Madison, Mississippi, where he received loving care from his children, sons-in-law, and daughter-in-law. The son of Mary Ann Smith of Leesburg, Florida, and the late James Grady Smith, Gary leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion. He is survived by his children Caleb Smith, Abigail Berrios, and Margaret Grace Masaracchia; his brother James Grady Smith Jr.; and his adored grandsons Malachi and Micah Berrios. Beyond his immediate family, Gary forged deep connections within each community he called home, cultivating friendships that transcended mere acquaintanceship and blossomed into familial bonds. The children feel blessed by this extended network of loved ones, acknowledging them as integral members of their father's family. Gary's life was a tapestry woven with threads of compassion, and the ripple of his influence extends far beyond the confines of blood relations. In his professional life, Gary excelled in medical device sales, where his dedication to helping others shone brightly. His commitment to excellence earned him the respect and admiration of healthcare professionals across the state of Georgia, reflecting his innate desire to make a positive difference in people's lives. Gary's magnetic personality and charm endeared him to all who had the privilege of knowing him. From rubbing shoulders with every U.S. President of his lifetime, to grassroots political activism, he navigated every sphere with grace and confidence, leaving an unforgettable mark wherever he went. His love for Georgia sports, particularly the Atlanta Braves, was surpassed only by his devotion to his family and faith. A stalwart member of the community, Gary dedicated over a decade to leading a daily morning Bible study for those recovering from addiction, embodying the fruit of the spirit in his selfless service to others. Gary's zest for life extended beyond his professional and philanthropic endeavors, as he reveled in the beauty of the Georgia coast, the soul-stirring melodies of great music, the peace of early morning deer hunts, and the timeless wisdom found in classic literature. His commitment to education and family bonds was unwavering, as he instilled in his children the values of history, learning, and unconditional love. A man of profound faith, Gary's life exemplified the virtues of kindness, generosity, and compassion. His untimely passing at the age of 59 leaves a void that can never be filled, but his memory will live on in the countless lives he touched and the hearts he forever changed. To honor Gary's memory and celebrate his enduring legacy, a celebration will take place at the Jekyll Island Club Faith Chapel on May 25, 2024, at 10:30 AM.
